Genesis for Normal People - The CrossTrainers Christian Education Class has begun a study of the book of Genesis. Anyone is welcome to join the class on Teams. Contact Karen Burgi to get the meeting link.

Friends Women - We are very happy to announce that Brad and Chelsea Carpenter, our missionaries in Rwanda, will be presenting a short program at our Friends Women meeting this Saturday, January 16. They will be focusing on the D4D Program. The meeting will be in the parlor and start at 1:00 PM. The Carpenters will be presenting via zoom.

The complete Friends Women meeting will be both in-person AND on Zoom. If you would like an invitation to join us through Zoom, please let Mary Ford know by Friday morning. You are welcome to come to the parlor as well. We will be masked and practicing social distancing.

Men’s Ministry Breakfast - Saturday, January 23 at 8:30 AM in the church parlor. All men are invited to join us for food, fellowship and prayer. All you need to bring is your mask!

Valentine cards for The Argyle residents - Pen Friends’ contact at The Argyle reported that their senior residents were very happy to receive our Christmas cards. She said that it was marvelous to see their faces light up. We would like to bless the 110 seniors again with Valentine cards. All are welcome to participate to write cards of encouragement. Margarita has Valentine cards you can use if you want to write multiple cards to the residents. If you are interested, please contact Margarita Jaramillo-Hall for more details. You can drop off your cards at the church in “The Argyle” box on the table in the foyer or at Margarita’s home. The deadline is Sunday, February 7. Thank you.

Denver Friends Church masks are in! We were able to order masks with Denver Friends Church embroidered on the side. They are black masks with white embroidery. We are asking for a $2 donation to help with the cost of the masks, but please do not let that keep you from taking a mask if you can’t give the $2. You can pick one up on Saturdays at our worship recordings or at the church office from 8:30 AM-2:30 PM on Mondays.

2020 was a strange year for photos! But...if you happen to have any photos from events that happened at Denver Friends Church during the year, please email (firstdenverfrie1@qwestoffice.net)them or mail them to the church office for our DFC year book. Thank you!

Friends Drumming - Friends Drumming will continue on Zoom on Monday and Wednesday at 11:00 AM and SATURDAY at 10:00 AM. NO drumming in the gym until further notice.

Contact Mary Ford for a Zoom invite.

Pie Social - Pie Social is going to look very different this year due to COVID. There is no way of knowing what the restrictions and policies will be by the time we have Pie Social, so we are assuming they will mostly be the same as they are now. That being said, there will not be a Pie Social as we are all used to having. Instead of a gym full of people and putting on a show for everyone and bidding on pies, this year's Pie Social will be almost completely virtual. We have been working on short skits that we will record and show to smaller groups, followed by a time of eating and

socially distanced fellowship in the gym. The night is still in the process of being planned, but I think we have a good replacement for the traditional Pie Social.

You can be looking for more updates in the future including how we plan on collecting money for camp, which will also look different this year. There is still a lot of planning to be done so if you have a youth, or know of youth, that would like to be part of this year’s Pie Social in order to raise money for camp, I would welcome the help and creativity on Wednesday nights at 6:30! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (Aaron V.) at fdfcyouth@gmail.com

Don’t Throw out your cards - One thing we think about at the beginning of a New Year is, that it’s time to throw out the “old’ and bring in the new. If you are thinking of tossing out any greeting cards you might have received in the past, please consider giving them to the Pen Friends Card Ministry. We will use the artwork to make new greeting cards. You can leave your old cards in the Argyle Seniors card box on the table in the foyer anytime  – no deadline. Thank you in advance for your donation.

Al-anon meetings at DFC - Al-anon is a support group for people who have a person in their life that has a problem with alcohol or drugs. It is a group for us to gain strength and encouragement from others in similar situations, using the 12 steps of AA - adapted to fit Al-anon.

If you know of anyone who struggles with another person’s drinking or drugs, please suggest they join us at 7:00 PM in room 204 on Tuesday nights. Contact the church office for more information or questions.

Celebrate Recovery - Celebrate Recovery is a Christian based, twelve-step program that meets at Denver Friends  for small group open share meetings at 5:00 PM on Sundays. Please contact the church office for more information.

· Group A will be joining us for the recording of the worship service THIS Saturday, January 9 at 3:00 PM in the sanctuary.

· Group B will be joining us on Saturday, January 16 at 3:00 PM in the sanctuary.

Each group will alternate weeks to attend. If you are ready to return and have not been added to a group, please contact the church office (303-455-7604 or firstdenverfrie1@qwestoffice.net) so we can add you to a group.

Genesis for Normal People - Starting this Sunday, January 10, the CrossTrainers will begin a study of the book of Genesis. Anyone is welcome to join the class on Teams. Contact Karen Burgi to get the meeting link.

Friends Women - Friends Women will meet on Saturday, January 16 at 1:00 PM in the church parlor. All women interested in supporting our DFC missions and missionaries are invited to attend.

Men’s Ministry Breakfast - Saturday, January 23 at 8:30 AM in the church parlor. All men are invited to join us for food, fellowship and prayer. All you need to bring is your mask!

Community Prayer Station Call - If the spirit is tugging at your heart to volunteer for participation in the community prayer station, here are the ways in which you can assist.

1.  We need people who can come to the church 1 to 3 times per month to collect the prayer requests and be sure the box containing information and

request cards is supplied.

2.  1 to 3 persons are needed to disseminate the prayer request as they are received.

3.  We need people to pray.

4.  We need people to follow up on the prayer request when that information is provided to us.

As you can see, there really is a minimal amount of time you need to be available to commit to participating but it is vital that we have more than two or three people shouldering this entire ministry. Pray about how God could use you in this endeavor.

Pen Friends Ministry Update - God was on the move, as we worked hard to meet the goal to give all 110 residents and 75 Argyle employees Christmas greeting cards. We weren’t satisfied with spreading Christmas cheer only to them, we also gave Christmas cards to 25 DFC widows/widowers for a whopping total of 210 cards! This would have never happened without the help of 25 volunteers (including kids) . Some wrote multiple cards as many as 20-30 each. Kaye E. wrote the cards for the employees and Cathy S. donated many unused greeting cards. Thanks for all the help! God bless you.

Friends Drumming - Friends Drumming will continue on Zoom on Monday and Wednesday at 11:00 AM and SATURDAY at 10:00 AM. NO drumming in the gym until further notice.

Contact Mary Ford for a Zoom invite.

Community Prayer Station Call - Are you feeling a desire to be a part of spreading God’s LOVE to our church neighborhood? Many of our neighbors are young families.

Do you desire to grow in your faith and prayer life?

Prayers are being lifted for the Holy Spirit to draw DFC people to participate in the proposed Community Prayer Station; people led by the Spirit to commit a minimal number of hours to move this ministry forward.

If you need more information, Mary Ford is the Mission and Outreach Committee contact for this ministry. Are you feeling the call to participate on some level?

1 Timothy 2:1 – First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.

NO Christmas Eve Candlelight service (sad) but . . .

We’re making a Christmas Eve video instead!! (Yes!!)

We need you to:

· Take a creative “Christmas-y” (dress and/or décor)

picture of yourself/selves

OR

· Make a creative 10-30 second Christmas video greeting to your DFC family

· Send those to us by Saturday, December 19

We will put them all together along with some other fun stuff in a special virtual “Christmas Eve Connection” video that will be posted to our website and YouTube by Christmas Eve. If you need help with the picture or short video, call us ASAP and we’ll send somebody!

Pen Friend - What is a Pen Friend (Pen Pal)? It’s us! Pen Friends are DFC folks who are willing to write a note of encouragement to brighten the day of lonely seniors. We are partnering with The Argyle Senior Residence located at 38th & Perry to connect with seniors during the pandemic, to show them God’s love for them through us..

We had wonderful participation for Thanksgiving, but since it was a trial run, we didn’t have enough cards for all 110 residents. Christmas, however, is special. It’s an opportune time to reach out with a message of God’s love for all. Our goal is to have enough volunteers to give each resident a Christmas card. Our deadline is THIS Sunday, December 13th .

We all love to receive Christmas cards, but seniors long for them, especially because seniors are from the generation that felt valued when they received Christmas cards.

Please consider being part of the card ministry to seniors. Contact Margarita Jaramillo-Hall for more instructions.

From Samaritan’s Purse - Thank you for participating in Operation Christmas Child. Each shoe box is a Gospel opportunity. We’ve missed you and didn’t want to let the year go without a celebration. We are planning for both an in-person and a remote option. Either way, the festivities will begin at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 20th.  We need you to reserve your spot by December 10th with Jeanie Houston so we can make sure you know where and when to party.

Quaker Chicks Remote Christmas Party - Sunday, December 20th at 4:00 PM. The party may be remote, but we are planning to have a gift exchange, so we need everyone planning to join to RSVP to Karen Burgi by December 10th to make sure you get all of the details. This party is open to all women, even if you have never joined the Quaker Chicks for an event before.

Al-anon meetings at DFC - Did you know that we now have an Al-anon group meeting at DFC? It is led by Marlene Pittman and meets at 7:00 PM in room 204 on Tuesday nights.

Al-anon is a support group for people who have a person in their life that has a problem with alcohol or drugs. It is a support group for us to gain strength and encouragement from others in similar situations, using the 12 steps of AA - adapted to fit Al-anon.

If you know of anyone who struggles with another person’s drinking (or drugs), please suggest they join us.

Our deadline is early - Sunday, December 13th .

We all love to receive Christmas cards, but seniors long for them, especially because seniors are from the generation that felt valued when they received Christmas cards.

Please consider being part of the card ministry to seniors. Contact Margarita Jaramillo-Hall for special instructions. Thank you.

Friends Women thank you! - FRIENDS WOMEN LIFT A HEART FULL OF GRATITUDE TO GOD as He laid it on the hearts of the faithful people of DFC and friends and family to so GENEROUSLY support the Craft and Bake Sale on November 14th.  Beyond anything we could have expected in this time of being asked to “stay at home” and keeping our distance, we saw God bless us so that we can bless his missionaries and mission work with $2,473.05. We even had some folks step forward to cover the cost of our NEW craft and bake sale sign so we do not have to take that out of the proceeds. We are also GRATEFUL beyond words for the donations made by everyone whether baked goods or crafts or other items for the sale. May you experience a blessing in your lives for your contributions!! Again THANK YOU ALL!

Community Prayer Station - As an outreach of the Mission and Outreach Committee, a Community Prayer Station permanently located at DFC has been proposed. A Vision and Mission Statement has been drafted and a few have said they would be willing to commit their time and talents beyond praying to move this outreach forward. For this to truly be an outreach ministry of DFC, we need more people stepping forward to say they feel God is asking them to be involved. It will not require an inordinate amount of your time or any special skills (possibly technical if we can make it more digitally friendly), just a desire to serve those who live in the neighborhood of DFC or who drive by regularly. Please pray about this and contact the church office if you want to be a part of this endeavor. The M & O Committee contact on this is Mary Ford.

VISION STATEMENT:  Loving our neighbors by praying for their physical, emotional and spiritual concerns.

MISSION STATEMENT:  We will show we are followers of Jesus, believing in the power of prayer and called to love our neighbors by praying for their concerns and providing a means whereby they can make them known.

Christian Refugees in the Middle East - Thank you for donating to the Christian Refugees. If you do not attend in-person church services, please give $1 or more in your regular offering and designate it for “Christian Refugees in the Middle East”.

Celebrate Recovery - Celebrate Recovery is a Christian based, twelve-step program that meets at Denver Friends  for small group open share meetings at 5:00 PM on Sundays. Please contact the church office for more information.

If you have a stocking at home from previous years, PLEASE use that or if you are not attending the recording  of services on Saturday, you can mail a check to Kay Burgi and designate FW EFM Clean Water.  We encourage you to have your children/grandchildren fill a stocking with coins so they feel like they are contributing to a child being able to drink clean, healthy water.

Friends Women thank you! - Thank you for all the donations, shopping and eating at the Friends Women sale. To date, we have made over $2,000 for missions

Pen Friend - What is a Pen Friend (Pen Pal)? It’s us! Pen Friends are DFC people who are willing to write a note of encouragement to brighten the day of lonely seniors.

This new outreach is a safe manner for us to connect to seniors during the pandemic, to show them God’s love for them through us. Unlike pen pals, whose relationship is based primarily, or even solely, on their exchange of letters, the Argyle residents will not be under any obligation to write to us. If a friendship develops it will be because both parties agree to it.

We are partnering with The Argyle located at 38th & Perry. Until the ministry is operating smoothly and is well coordinated with their staff, Margarita Jaramillo-Hall will be the point person of the ministry. She will work with the Argyle to ensure the maximum number of residents get correspondence from us.

If you are interested and are able to write a note of encouragement, please contact Margarita Jaramillo-Hall for more information.

Remember, you can donate online - at www.denverfriendschurch.com. Click on the “donate” button on the top right of the home page. You can also mail your check to the church office or to our treasurer, Kay Burgi.  We thank you so much for your continued giving through the COVID-19 crisis.  You are amazing, Denver Friends Church!

Small Things (by Chuck Orwiler) - Jay Hallowell’s recent message from Zechariah got me to thinking about “despising the day of small things.” That is, I need to not devalue the significance of my unhistoric life which is a part of God’s kingdom coming. In particular, I have been wondering what my putzy little life can contribute to the enormity of social injustice.

That got me to thinking of the Zephaniah (not to be confused with Zechariah) Groups I proposed in a sermon in June. The groups were intended to focus on issues of social and racial justice. I don’t know of any groups that have started, but I do hear of individuals among us who are out there doing small things.

Maybe what fits our current situation is a Zephaniah Network. This would be

a means of encouraging one another in our small things towards becoming a people of humility, courage and the grace of God intentionally resisting pride, fear, and lies in real life over the long haul.

Please let me know if you want to be a part of this network. Chuck Orwiler

Thank you! - We want to thank everyone who sent us a card of blessing and encouragement during Pastor Appreciation month. We have always felt love and appreciation from the congregation of DFC, but it was an added blessing to read the notes and receive a few surprises throughout the month of October.

Pastor Frank and Janet
